Adult Classes (Sunday Morning Offerings)

Why the Episcopal Church? meets weekly. Come to this class if you wish to learn more about the Bible, the Book of Common Prayer and the History and Worship of the Episcopal Church. This course provides adults in our church with membership information including preparation for the sacraments of baptism and confirmation. Led by Father Newell Graham in the Burgreen Room (Library)

Experiencing God: This popular scripture study, developed by Henry and Richard Blackaby, will be held this fall. This study seeks to awaken Christian believers to a radically God centered way of life and invites participants to come to know God in their lives, to recognize God’s voice, and to understand God’s will in their lives. No prior knowledge of the Bible is assumed, and all members of the parish are invited to take part in this new and exciting course. Led by Father John McCard and Lisa McFarlin in Claiborne 226

The Knights of St. Martin ChristCare Group:  ChristCare is a ministry of small groups, usually 3-12 people, with a trained group leader. Groups meet regularly, in homes or at church. ChristCare Groups provide an environment to be in small community, to share with and care for others and to experience the love of Christ in a personal way. The groups are generally formed around a topic, but stress care and community, prayer and worship, bible study and service to others. All groups create a covenant that includes promises members make to each other. The covenant includes the purpose of the group, time, location and duration of meetings, some restrictions on discussions (no politics, no gossip), and a pledge to be respectful and courteous of others' feelings and opinions. Lastly the covenants include a promise of confidentiality, wherein "what is said in the room, stays in the room."  Small groups are seen by many as the way to make a large church seem small and are often a gateway to deeper church involvement. Led by Vince Vitti and Jake Duffy in Claiborne 224

The Rise and Fall of Nearly Everything meets weekly. This class is for adults who have “the gift of wonder”, who have more questions than answers. Led by Charles Fulghum and Sid Oakley in Claiborne 225

Fellowship in Gable Hall is an alternative to the Sunday Classroom experience. With a good cup of coffee in hand, become acquainted with your neighbors in the Body of Christ, the Church. (Note: Our price beats Starbucks)

Education for Ministry (EFM)
Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. in the Parlor
EFM is preparation for the ministry to which we are called and is administered by the School of Theology at the University of the South in Sewanee. It is a four-year curriculum, and each “year” is a nine-month cycle of study. Students enroll for one cycle at a time, and pay the full year’s tuition. In case of a move during the academic cycle, a student may transfer to another group.

The seminar group is the nucleus of the EFM program. A group consists of six to eleven students and a trained mentor meeting weekly over the course of a nine-month academic year. These meetings are usually from two-and-a half to three hours in length.

Through study, prayer, and reflection, EFM groups examine the entire sweep of the Christian tradition from the earliest period to the present. Students learn the disciplines of biblical exegesis and interpretation, systematic theology, Church history, ethics, liturgics, and aescetical theology.
