It’s official! Suthers Center for Christian Outreach has opened its doors!
Over the past year or two you’ve heard about our vision to create a one-stop shop for people in need. That vision has become reality, and Suthers Center for Christian Outreach is open for business.
On September 12, 2011, more than 200 St. Martin’s parishioners gathered to celebrate the Grand Opening of the Center, a collaborative venture among the churches of Brookhaven Christian Ministries, formed to provide aid for people in need living in the Brookhaven and Chamblee neighborhoods. The Center’s namesake, our beloved Father Suthers, presided over the ribbon cutting of the Center’s Thrift Shop, which generates proceeds to support the Center’s ministries. These include the food pantry from Oglethorpe Presbyterian and emergency financial assistance for utilities, rent and other basic living expenses. All of the Center's ministries have been extremely successful! Assisting with the ribbon cutting were John and Joyce Akins, previous managers of St Martin’s Budget Helper Shop. (photo at right)
Sid Oakley, Stewardship Campaign co-chair, presented a gift to Lisa McFarlin on behalf of the congregation for her initiative and perseverance in leading the Suthers Center task force from vision to reality (See photo below of Lisa McFarlin with her gift). In taking a moment to reflect on what we have accomplished together, Sid reminded us on “Get Committed Sunday” that our work is more important than ever, and that sustaining our ability to serve our surrounding communities in Christ’s name will require ongoing commitment from each of us.
There are a number of ways you can help ensure this ministry’s success:
1- Help us get the word out! Bring friends, family and neighbors to begin your holiday shopping for a wide variety of items offered at significant discounts.
2- Volunteer! We have openings for people to sort, price and display the donated merchandise we receive each week, as well as assist customers in the Thrift Shop.
3- Donate! We need food for the food pantry; gently used furniture, clothing and household items for the thrift shop, and financial contributions for our Emergency Assistance Fund.
The Center is located in the Broad Street Antiques Mall at 3550 Broad Street. Hours of operation are Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Wednesday and Sunday 1:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. For more information, please visit The Suthers Center Website.
